Experiments were conducted on 1-year-old Douglas fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] and 2- to 3-month-old alder [Alnus rubra (Bong)] seedlings growing in drying soils to determine the relative influence of root and leaf water status on stomatal conductance (gc). The water status of shoots was manipulated independently of that of the roots using a pressure chamber that enclosed the root system. Pressurizing the chamber increases the turgor of cells in the shoot but not in the roots. Seedling shoots were enclosed in a whole-plant cuvette and transpiration and net photosynthesis rates measured continuously. In both species, stomatal closure in response to soil drying was progressively reversed with increasing pressurization. Responses occurred within minutes of pressurization and measurements almost immediately returned to pre-pressurization levels when the pressure was released. Even in wet soils there was a significant increase in gc with pressurization. In Douglas fir, the stomatal response to pressurization was the same for seedlings grown in dry soils for up to 120 d as for those subjected to drought stress over 40 to 60 d. The stomatal conductance of both Douglas fir and alder seedlings was less sensitive to root chamber pressure at higher vapour pressure deficits (D), and stomatal closure in response to increasing D from 1.04 to 2.06 kPa was only partially reversed by pressurization. Our results are in contrast to those of other studies on herbaceous species, even though we followed the same experimental approach. They suggest that it is not always appropriate to invoke a ‘feedforward’ model of short-term stomatal response to soil drying, whereby chemical messengers from the roots bring about stomatal closure.  相似文献

Three years old seedlings of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) were exposed lo filtered air, O3 (day and night concentrations of 78 and 30 μgm?3: respectively). NH3 (54 μg m?3) and to a mixture of NH3+O3 (day and night concentrations of 49 + 83 and 49 + 44 μg m?3 respectively), for 5 months in fumigation chambers. Both gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured on shoots which had sprouted at the beginning of the exposure period. After 4. 8, 10 and 20 weeks of exposure, light response curves of electron transport rate (J) were determined, in which J was deduced from chlorophyll fluorescence. Net CO2 assimiialion was measured at maximum light intensity of 560) μmol m?2 S?1 (Pn.560). After 8 and 10 weeks of exposure also light response curves of CO2 assimilation were assessed. Shoots exposed to O3 showed a reduction in net CO2 assimilation as compared to the control shoots during the entire exposure period. The reduction was related lo a lower chlorophyll content and a lower electron transport rate, whereas no effect on quantum yield efficiency (qy) was observed. In contrast, shoots exposed to NH3 showed a positive effect on photosynthesis. Shoots exposed to NH3. + O3 showed a rapid increase in Pn.560, in the period between 4 and 8 weeks to a level equal of that of the NH3-treatment. After this period a decline in Pn.560 was observed. After 10 weeks of exposure shoots exposed to O3 showed an increased transpiration rate in the dark as compared to the control shoots. In addition, water use efficiency (WUE) declined as a result of an increase in leaf conductance. Both observations indicate that the stomatal apparatus was affected by O3. A high transpiration rate in the dark was also found for shoots esposed to NHX. However, shoots exposed to NH3+ O3 showed neither an effect on WUE, nor an effect on transpiration rate in the dark. The possibility that NH3 delayed the O3 induced effects on photosynthesis and stomatal conductance is discussed.  相似文献

Bud quiescence release, considered as the ultimate dormancy breaking phase, was achieved in Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco by a 9-week cold (5°C) treatment, under short daylength (9 h) followed by a transfer to mild temperature (22°C) under long daylength (16 h). Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), zeatin-type (Z) and isopentenyladenine-type (iPA) cytokinin (CK) levels were measured by means of an ELISA technique performed on HPLC-fractionated extracts of terminal and axillary buds. During the cold period, all hormones except IP-type CK levels decreased, whereas the opposite observation was made after transfer to mild temperature and long daylength, when buds started to grow. Some other immunoreactive compounds were also detected and quantified. The ABA-glucosyl ester (ABA-GE) level pattern was similar to that of ABA, but no accumulation occurred at mild temperatures. A putative IAA conjugate, more polar than IAA, was also detected. Its level increased transiently like IAA in terminal buds and, to a lesser extent, in axillary buds during the 10th week of the experiment. In terminal buds, isopentenyladenosine ([9R]-iP) was released by alkaline hydrolysis of a polar immunoreactive compound detected with anti-[9R]iP antibodies. This compound accumulated during the cold period and quickly dropped at 22°C. Relationships between environmental conditions and endogenous hormones are discussed.  相似文献

 In a pot trial growth and transpiration of 3-year-old Douglas-fir seedlings on an acid, sandy soil was examined at a deficient (30 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) and an excessive level (120 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) of NH4 application. Dissolved ammonium sulphate was applied to the pots weekly for two growing seasons. In half of the pots a complete set of other nutrients was applied in optimal proportions to the applied nitrogen. Water supply was optimal and transpiration was recorded. At the end of the second treatment season irrigation was stopped for 2 weeks during dry and sunny weather. Both high application of NH4 and additional nutrients increased shoot growth and transpiration demand in the first treatment year. The root system was smaller at higher N level and this reduced water uptake accordingly. In the second year the combination of high NH4 + and additional nutrients affected root functioning predominantly due to salinity effects and this seriously decreased water uptake capacity and shoot water potentials, finally resulting in tree death. Without addition of other nutrients the high NH4 + application resulted in a high degree of soil acidification, which damaged the roots, that showed a decrease in water uptake capacity. At the low NH4 supply level soil acidification was lower, and root functioning was not affected, and the trees recovered quickly from the imposed drought. By comparison with the major modern plant communities of southern Patagonia, the changing post-glacial vegetation of the region is reconstructed from macrofossils derived from deposits in the Cueva del Mylodon, Ultima Esperanza, S. Chile. The oldest deposits, carbon-dated as c. 12,400 B.P., comprise dung of the extinct ground sloth Mylodon darwinii and show the animal to have fed entirely on Cyperaceae, Gramineae and species associated with these in the modern cool, wet sedge-grasslands of western Patagonia, communities which would be expected after the retreat of the ice. Overlying deposits of well-preserved, wind-blown leaf-litter permitted some quantitative analyses which show a rise of evergreen forest dominated by Nothofagus betuloides that reached its maximum c. 7000 B.P. and then declined as it was replaced by deciduous N. pumilio forest. A break in the fossil plant record, covering the human occupation about 5643 B.P. and the subsequent final appearance of Mylodon remains, is followed by evidence of mixed evergreen/deciduous forest in which Nothofagus pumilio gradually increases in importance to give deciduous forest some 2500 years ago similar to that found in the environs of the cave in historical times. Comparison with pollen diagrams shows that the modern climatic and vegetation difference between E. Fudgia and Ultima Eeperanza has persisted throughout the post-glacial period.  相似文献

Abstract

The Monotrysian superfamily Incurvarioidea (Lepidoptera) is now known to be present inNew Zealand. A mummified partly decayed male, parasitised pupae, larval head capsules, and characteristic cocoons are associated with long (1500–2000 mm) meandering cortical scribble-like mines in sapling Weinmannia, Nothofagus and Myrsine. The fragments and larval biology display features of Prodoxidae, but cannot be assigned to a genus.

Wing pattern, some forewing venation, pupal structure, male genitalia and some female ovipositor structures, larval head capsule and pronotum, and details of the pupal cell and larval mine are described and illustrated.  相似文献

系统发育分析结果表明,尽管Lanzia berggrenii能在寄主中形成基物子座,但与膜盘菌属的核心种关系较近,而与蜡盘菌科成员关系较远,应该归属于膜盘菌属。在广义的膜盘菌属的系统树中该种及在新西兰发现的4个新种构成一个单系群,分别命名为Hymenoscyphus haasticus,H. kiko,H.ohakune和H.waikaia。它们的共同特征:基物均为南青冈叶片,侧丝顶端分枝形成类似囊层被的结构,覆盖于子实层上部。Lanzia berggrenii var.metrosideri应为膜盘菌属中一个独立的种,即Hymenoscyphus metrosideri。  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Trees with a partial leaf-shedding pattern and other morphological features a priori considered intermediate between those of the deciduous Nothofagus antarctica (G. Forster) Oersted and the evergreen N. dombeyi (Mirb.) Oersted (Nothofagaceae) were found in natural stands. The hybridization between a deciduous and an evergreen species of Nothofagus has not been reported so far in natural communities. METHODS: The putative hybrids and the two presumed parental species were compared using 14 enzyme systems as well as shoot, leaf and reproductive morphology. KEY RESULTS: Six enzyme systems showed good resolution (MDH-B, IDH, SKDH, 6-PGDH, GOT and PGI) and in four of them (PGI, MDH-B, SKDH and 6-PGDH) the putative hybrids showed intermediate zymogram patterns between N. antarctica and N. dombeyi. Both principal coordinates analysis on isozyme data and principal components analysis (PCA) on quantitative morphological traits of shoots and leaves separated both parental species and located the putative hybrids closer to N. antarctica than to N. dombeyi. In the PCA, the number of basal cataphylls and the length : width ratio of leaves were the variables most discriminating among shoots of the three entities. The putative hybrids were intermediate between both species regarding leaf vernation, outline and venation, variation in leaf shape (length/width) with position on the parent shoot and in staminate inflorescence and cupule morphology. For other morphological traits, the putative hybrids resembled one of the parental species or differed from both species (e.g. valve morphology). CONCLUSIONS: Isoenzymatic and morphological data sets support the idea of the hybrid nature (probably F1 generation) of the semi-deciduous trees found. Nothofagus antarctica and N. dombeyi are probably more closely related than previously assumed. The relevance of pollen type in revealing evolutionary relationships between Nothofagus species is supported, and that of leaf-shedding pattern is rejected.  相似文献

We studied invasion into native Nothofagus/Austrocedrus forest by many introduced tree species planted between 1910 and 1940 in plantations near the center of Isla Victoria, in northern Patagonia. We located virtually all individuals of these species in 30 ha of forest in two series of transects at increasing distances from the plantations. Although these species included many reported as highly invasive elsewhere, we found little evidence for invasion on Isla Victoria, with many invasive species utterly failing to invade native forest. There was a notable decline with distance in number of introduced individuals, but wind direction appeared to be unimportant. Pseudotsuga menziesii and Juniperus communis were the only 2 species represented by many individuals, while 4 pine species plus Araucaria araucana were far less numerous and 6 other species were found fewer than 10 times each. Even those species found repeatedly were represented overwhelmingly by small individuals, and the great majority of introduced individuals were found not in native forest proper, but in somewhat open areas such as road verges, small remnant pastures, and deer trails. Invasion may be occurring, but too slowly to be clearly evidenced yet because of the longevity of the dominant native trees. Factors that may be stopping or slowing invasion include competition in gaps with native species, browsing by introduced deer, unfavorable soil, allelopathy, and natural enemies or other idiosyncratic factors for particular species. The absence of substantial invasion so far is no guarantee against future invasion, particularly if some major natural or anthropogenous disturbance were to occur.  相似文献
